The Pieta was created in remembrance of the Warsaw Uprising of 1944 by artist Andrzej Pitynski, who is recognised as one of world’s leading monumental sculptors. He works at the Johnson Atelier in Mercerville, New Jersey, USA.

The Pieta was donated to St. Mary’s Cathedral by the Polish Association in Cape Town in gratitude to the people of Cape Town, and in acknowledgement of the long- standing Polish presence in Mother City.
