Battle of Westerplatte

 

The Battle of Westerplatte was one of the first battles in Germany's invasion of Poland, marking the start of World War II in Europe. Beginning on 1 September 1939, German army, naval and air forces and Danzig police assaulted Poland's Military Transit Depot (Wojskowa Składnica Tranzytowa, or WST) on the Westerplatte peninsula in the harbor of the Free City of Danzig. The Poles held out for seven days in the face of an assault that included dive-bomber attacks and naval shelling.

Westerplatte's defense served as an inspiration for the Polish Army and people in the face of German advances elsewhere, and is still regarded as a symbol of resistance in modern Poland.

 

 This cemetery on the Westerplatte peninsula contains the bodies of the 15 men who died during the first engagement of World War II when Nazi Germany launched its attack on Poland here at the Polish Military Transit Depot.

Przy okienku wartowni Nr 3, stal szeregowy, Stefan Jezierski, pierwsza ofiara walki na Westerplatte.

Pocisk z dziala przeciwlotniczego, wpadl przez okienko strzelnicy i rozerwal mu glowe. Koledzy wyniesli jego szczatki i pochowali w leju po bombie, kawalek od wartowni, Nr 3. Niestety chwile pozniej, ostrzal z pancernika, ponownie uderzyl w to miejsce, i szczatki  Stefana Jezierskiego, znowu sie rozsypaly wkolo krateru. Koledzy nie mieli czasu  juz go chowac,  szczatki spadly na dno dolu, wiec zasypano dol.

Stefan Jezierski do dzis lezy w tym miejscu, i tam spoczywa w kawalkach.

Na cmentarzyku, Obroncow Westerplastte, ktory znajduje sie pośrodku polwyspu (tam gdzie byly ruiny wartowni nr 5, spoczywa tylko jeden zolnierz znaleziony 1963 roku.

Na cmentarzyku stoja tylko symboliczne groby, Obecnie nie doliczono sie 10 obroncow, wiadomo ze zgineli, znane sa ich nazwiska, ale nie wiadomo gdzie sa pochowani.
